Wholesale power prices plunged in April

The average wholesale price of electricity in New England in April was the third lowest for any single month in 12 years, thanks to mild weather, low prices for natural gas and record-low power demand, according to ISO-New England, which oversees the region’s power grid.

The average price of $25.88 per megawatt hour was 55 percent below the March average of $57.93, and 37 percent lower than the $41.20 average in April 2014, ISO said Thursday.

Milder weather last month helped push demand for energy to its lowest during any month since January 2000. ISO says April is generally the month of lowest energy use during the year, and last month continued a trend of flat or declining energy use in New England, driven in part by energy-efficiency measures. ISO said energy use in April was down about 2.5 percent compared with April 2014, even though the difference in the average daily temperature for the two months was less than 1 degree Fahrenheit.
