Central Mass. gained nearly 6,000 jobs in April

Central Massachusetts saw some of the healthiest gains in April’s job market over the last year compared with other regions of the commonwealth, according to a state report released Tuesday.

Of the 15 areas of Massachusetts measured by the federal government, the Worcester area recorded the largest gain outside of Boston in April when compared to April 2014, picking up an estimated 5,800 jobs, or 2.1 percent of all jobs in the region. (The more populous Boston-Cambridge area added 44,000.)

Meanwhile, the Framingham area added a healthy 3,200 jobs, or 1.9 percent. The other statistical area measured by the government – Leominster, Gardner and Fitchburg – added 1,300 jobs for a gain of 2.7 percent, according to the data released Tuesday by the Massachusetts Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development (EOLWD).

The data is not seasonally adjusted, according to EOLWD.

Last week, EOLWD announced that the Bay State gained 10,100 jobs in April, marking the eighth consecutive month of job gains. That brought the unemployment rate down for the seventh straight month, to 4.7 percent. It’s the lowest rate for Massachusetts since January 2008.

From March to April, Central Massachusetts gained close to 6,000 jobs, broken down as here by statistical region:

     • Worcester picked up 2,700 jobs, for a gain of 1 percent. The unemployment rate, of 3.3 percent, is down from 4.4 percent in April 2014.

     • Framingham added 2,400 jobs (gain: 1.4 percent). The unemployment rate, 4.6 percent, fell from 6 percent in April 2014.

     • Leominster-Gardner-Fitchburg added 800 jobs (gain: 1.6 percent). The unemployment rate, 5.1 percent, fell from 7 percent in April 2014.
