WPI joins biopharma trade group

Worcester Polytechnic Institute has joined a biomanufacturing industry trade group to help develop technology education and training curricula, the school announced last week.

WPI is the first academic institution to join the trade group, the Bio-Process Systems Alliance (BPSA), the statement said. WPI’s Biomanufacturing Education and Training Center (BETC), located in Gateway Park, helps develop workers in the industry and offers consulting services to biotech companies.

“Biologic drugs and vaccines are the future of human therapeutics, and single-use technologies are changing the way these products are manufactured,” said Kamal Rashid, director of the BETC and a research professor at WPI. “We have integrated single-use technologies at our center, and we see the need to build consensus around best practices, curriculum content, and learning outcomes for training people to work in a single-use biomanufacturing environment. We look forward to working with the members of BPSA to begin this important process.”
