P&W to invest $456K grant in Worcester rail yard

Providence & Worcester Railroad has been awarded $455,691 from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) for improvements to the Wye track at the Southbridge Street yard in Worcester, MassDOT announced Monday.

The grant is one of five totaling about $2 million for industrial rail projects as part of the 2015 Industrial Rail Access Program (IRAP).

The funding is being matched by more than $1.7 million in private-sector funds for a total of $3.7 million to be invested freight rail improvements. IRAP, which is in its third year, provides grants to railroads, rail shippers and municipalities that identify a public or economic benefit from rail infrastructure improvements.

Catania Spagna Corp. in Ayer was awarded $500,000 for rail siding, track expansion and unloading improvements for Pan Am Railways.

The three other grant recipients were: MWRA – Fore River Railroad Corp. ($500,000) in Quincy for track and capacity upgrades at Fore River Shipyard; Borden & Remington Corp. ($383,910) in Fall River for Massachusetts Coastal Railroad improvements; and Pioneer Valley Railroad ($175,045) in Westfield for new rail siding at the Railroad Distribution Services facility.
