Lenovo lines up SimpliVity platform in IT server

SimpliVity of Westborough and the Chinese computer hardware manufacturer Lenovo have agreed to a deal in which SimpliVity’s data virtualization technology will be included with some of Lenovo’s servers, the companies announced Thursday.

SimpliVity’s OmniStack data virtualization platform, will be integrated into Lenovo’s System x3650 servers through Arrow Electronics. The integrated products will be offered in North America starting in the fourth quarter.

The SimpliVity product that will run on the Lenovo server is what’s called a “hyperconverged” IT platform that provides all IT services below the hypervisor, a piece of software that creates and runs virtual machines.

Those services will include storage and networking, real-time data deduplication, compression, and optimization functions along with built-in backup, disaster recovery, and wide-area network optimization capabilities.

“The partnership and joint solution is truly driven by customer demand in the market,” said SimpliVity CEO Doron Kempel, a WBJ Business Leader of the Year for 2015. “Businesses desire the flexibility and performance of the Lenovo systems and the superior data efficiency, mobility, built-in data protection and global unified management capabilities that only SimpliVity’s hyperconverged solutions deliver.”

SimpliVity employs about 500, with 322 in Westborough. Earlier this year, the privately held company said it raised $175 million in Series D funding, bring SimpliVity’s value to $1 billion.
