Perkins appoints Ames as executive director

Michael W. Ames has been named the seventh executive director and CEO of Perkins, the Lancaster-based human services agency that includes the Doctor Franklin Perkins School.

Ames, a resident of Harvard, will take on his new role later this month, according to a statement from Perkins’ board of trustees Tuesday. His previous human service work includes direct service, supervisory and administrative positions at Crittenton Women’s Union, the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, and the Key Program.

Perkins serves children and adolescents with emotional and behavioral challenges at the Doctor Franklin Perkins School; and serves typically developing infants, toddlers, and preschoolers in the Perkins Child Development Center. In addition, the organization provides community mental health services at Perkins Behavioral Health, day vocational and residential programs for adults with intellectual disabilities in Clinton, assisted living services at Davis Manor, and therapeutic horsemanship programs a Rein in a Dream.

The agency employs more than 300 and has an annual operating budget of more than $20 million.

“The position of Executive Director/CEO of Perkins requires a unique set of skills and talents because Perkins’s programs are so diverse and serve so many different groups,” Charles W. Hughes II, president of the Perkins Board of Trustees, said in the statement. “We believe that Dr. Michael Ames brings to the position the requisite experience, educational background, temperament, and skills to sustain and improve Perkins’s current programs and to explore additional opportunities for service to children, families and adults with unique and special challenges.”
