Pierce promoted to regional planning commission chief

Janet Pierce

The Central Massachusetts Regional Planning Commission (CMRPC) has promoted Janet A. Pierce to the role of executive director, the organization announced Wednesday. She is the organization’s fourth director since it was founded 52 years ago.

Pierce joined CMRPC as business manager in 2008, and in 2012, spearheaded CMRPC’s Regional Services Division, formed in response to the increasing fiscal challenges faced by towns and cities.

Based at Worcester’s Union Station, CMRPC is the regional planning entity for Central Massachusetts, serving Worcester and 39 area communities. One of 13 regional planning agencies in Massachusetts. CMRPC offers an array of programs, including transportation and transit planning, land-use planning, data and mapping, homeland security and regional services.

Wednesday’s statement said that beyond CMRPC efforts, working across municipal borders to solve problems is on the rise. An example is the recently launched Community Compact program, chaired by Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito, which supports inter-municipal partnerships.

“This is a pivotal moment for Central Massachusetts,” Pierce said in the statement. “We’re excited to partner with the administration and our communities on the Community Compact program. While our municipalities have unique and constantly evolving needs, working across sector and boundaries, and opening the channels of communication, will strengthen us individually and as a region.”
