Massachusetts receives $1 million in FEMA funds for last winter’s storms

The first $1 million in federal assistance for last January's major storm has arrived in the Bay State from Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) and FEMA announced Thursday that $1 million in federal disaster funding will be distributed to cover emergency services costs and damage repair from the January 26 to 28 storm. This funding will go to Barnstable, Bristol, Dukes, Essex, Middlesex, Nantucket, Norfolk, Plymouth, Suffolk and Worcester Counties.

“With winter just around the corner, the delivery of federal aid for last season’s historic snowfall and freezing temperatures, will provide critical assistance for state agencies, public transit, nonprofits and our cities and town,” Gov. Charlie Baker said in the statement. “The diligent work of our emergency management officials in partnership with those impacted by this severe winter, will ensure relief as recovery, repair and future resiliency efforts continue.”

Additionally, the joint statement said, federal disaster funds are being made available in the all those counties except Nantucket County to reimburse 75 percent of the eligible costs of plowing and clearing snow for the 48-hour period. The statement said projections indicate those eligible costs may exceed $150 million.
