Baker, emergency officials watching Hurricane Joaquin

With Massachusetts slammed by heavy rains Wednesday morning that snarled commutes, Gov. Charlie Baker said his team is in constant contact with state and local emergency management officials and keeping an eye on a potential hurricane in the coming days.

"After last winter we take all weather stuff very seriously," Baker told reporters, referencing the snow and cold weather that knocked out MBTA service.

Asked about his confidence that the MBTA and its commuter rail system will hold up in the event of more heavy rains and potentially landfall of Hurricane Joaquin, Baker said, "I think the stormy weather over the next couple of days is something we will be okay with. I do think the most important thing we need to do is understand exactly what's happening with that hurricane that's coming up from the gulf. Because that's the one that under some of the models suggests it might land here Friday or Saturday and with a pretty serious hurricane-level type force. And if that's going to be the case, we obviously have a lot of prep work to do."
