MBTA continues fare hike tour

Courtesy Antonio Caban/SHNS Morning commuters step off Green Line train at Park Street Station. A debate is underway regarding whether MBTA fare increases are actually a raise in fees, contrary to the governor's promise of no new fees.

Representatives of the MBTA will be touring the state this week as they continue to gather feedback on proposed fare hikes.

The MBTA will hold public hearings in Norwood, Woburn, Chelsea, Roxbury and Weymouth this week. The MBTA is deciding between proposals to raise fares by either 6.7 percent or 9.7 percent on average, based on an interpretation that a cap instituted by the Legislature allows for a total increase of up to 10 percent every two years.

At previous hearings, riders have spoken in protest of the proposed increases, with many saying it would disproportionately affect the poor.
