Wind energy company expanding U.S. footprint

The Danish energy company that owns the lease to develop an off-shore wind farm off the coast of Martha's Vineyard has obtained the development rights for a new project in the waters off of New Jersey.
DONG Energy, which lays claim to the largest off-shore wind farm in the world in the Irish Sea, entered the United States market last spring by securing through auction the rights to develop a 1,000 megawatt wind farm 15 miles off the southern coast of the Vineyard.
Now with a beachhead established in Boston for the Bay State Wind project, DONG Energy will announce Tuesday that it is taking over the lease from RES Americas Development for project development rights to 160,480 acres located 10 nautical miles off the coast of New Jersey, a project company officials say will deepen its commitment in the U.S.
The deal must be approved by the U.S. Department of Interior's Bureau of Ocean Energy Management.
"The U.S. is an interesting market for offshore wind with the potential to become a significant area for future development. With the transfer of the offshore wind development projects in the U.S., we are broadening our international scope," Samuel Leupold, executive vice president of wind power for DONG Energy, said in a statement.
Leupold said site conditions in New Jersey are similar to those in north and western Europe where DONG Energy already operates large-scale wind farms. The company plans a new farm off the coast of Great Britain that will dwarf its already world-largest off-shore wind facility.
The New Jersey lease auction was the ninth competitive sale for renewable energy in federal waters from Massachusetts and Rhode Island to Maryland and Virginia.
Bay State Wind is currently in the permitting process to potentially install wind capacity of up to 1,000 megawatts in the waters off the Vineyard.
