Poll finds riders want safety standards extended to Uber, Lyft

A poll has found that people want safety standards, such as fingerprinting, extended from cabs to cover ride-hailing services such as Uber and Lyft.
A majority of Uber and Lyft passengers in three Massachusetts counties believe their drivers should be held to the same safety standards as taxis and livery cars, according to a New England Livery Association poll released as lawmakers continue to mull legislation regulating the ride-hailing companies.
The livery association and others in the taxi industry have voiced support for regulating transportation network companies. Uber representatives have said additional requirements, like fingerprinting drivers, could hinder their ability to operate in Massachusetts.
According to the survey, 66 percent of "very frequent" and "somewhat frequent" Uber and Lyft passengers -- riders who use the service at least once a week -- said they feel safer knowing employees must undergo fingerprinting. Sixty-one percent of the same population said Uber and Lyft should be held to the same safety standards as taxis and livery cars.
Among all respondents, nearly 80 percent labeled background checks as necessary for public safety and 76 percent said the same of requirements for requiring insurance, registration and vehicle identification plates.
The poll of more than 1,100 voters from Suffolk, Norfolk and Middlesex counties was conducted on Feb. 15 and 16 by Cence Cincotti Strategies. Around 57 percent of respondents said they never use Uber or Lyft and around 24 percent said they never use taxis or livery cars.
