New York City airline JetBlue, which operates flights of the Worcester Regional Airport, boosted its first quarter earnings by 45.6 percent year-over-year to $199 million on the back of more riders and cheaper fuel.

The earnings report from Worcester Airport’s only commercial carrier was released Tuesday with the company growing its first quarter earnings to $199 million while revenue passenger miles were up by 14.1 percent in the quarter and building capacity by the same number. However, yield per passenger mile decreased in the quarter by 8 percent.

The company’s operating expense per available seat mile for the first quarter decreased 12.6 percent year over year to 9.73 cents, according to the release. JetBlue had no fuel hedges in place in the first quarter with the realized fuel price in the quarter being $1.17 per gallon, a 43-percent decrease versus first quarter 2015 fuel price of $2.06.

JetBlue's Worcester service launched in 2013 with flights to Florida.
