The Senate Ways and Means Committee will release its version of the fiscal 2017 budget on May 17, according to the committee's chairwoman Sen. Karen Spilka, who said the Senate is “proceeding with caution” on spending given the sluggish tax collections through April.

"We will have a press conference and everybody will be invited and we'll talk about the budget," Ways and Means Chairwoman Sen.Karen Spilka told the News Service following the adjournment of a formal session Thursday.

Last week, the House approved a $39.5 billion budget for fiscal 2017 that was built on an expectation of 4.3 percent revenue growth in the year that begins in July 1. House lawmakers kept the rate of spending in their budget plan to about 3.5 percent with a bottom line slghtly smaller than that proposed by Gov Charlie Baker.
