Massachusetts milk sales plummet 44%

The sales of milk by Massachusetts dairy farmers fell by 44 percent in 2015, according to the National Agriculture Statistics Service.

Milk sales by farmers across New England fell by 27 percent in 2015 with the cash receipts for milk totaling $778.9 million in 2015, or 27 percent lower than 2014, according to the New England field office for the organization.

However, Massachusetts dairy farmers had an even more dramatic fall off in sales from $60.3 million in 2014 to $40 million in 2015.

New England milk production decreased slightly in 2015 to 4.17 billion pounds. The rate per cow averaged 20,062 pounds, which was 52 pounds more than 2014. The annual average number of milk cows on farms was 207,900 head, down 1,000 head from 2014.
