Worcester church demolition discussion to continue

The discussion around whether the empty Notre Dame des Canadiens church in downtown Worcester can be demolished will continue, as the Historical Commission asked for more details regarding the condition of the building, restoration costs and prior efforts to find uses for it.

CitySquare II Development Co. came before the Commission at its Thursday night meeting, requesting a waiver on the one-year delay for demolition of the structure, according to city officials. Because the building is listed on the Massachusetts Cultural Resources Information System it is subject to a one-year demolition delay by Worcester ordinance.

Rather than grant this request at the offset, the Historical Commission officials asked for more details from the company about the condition of the building and efforts made by owners to keep it up. Further discussion of the request and the church's fate will take place at the Commission's next meeting on June 30.
