House extends jobs bill deadline
The House agreed last week to extend the deadline for the Joint Committee on Economic Development and Emerging Technologies to make its report on Gov. Baker's $918 million, five-year economic development plan (H 3983), dubbed "Opportunities for All," which Baker has said "unleashes the unmatched ingenuity of our citizens."
Baker and Economic Development Secretary Jay Ash led the committee through a briefing on the jobs bill in early April. The bill was originally referred to the committee on Feb. 1. The extension order adopted Thursday by the House -- the Senate has not yet concurred -- would give the committee until Wednesday, June 15 to say whether the bill should or should not be adopted.
The bill would direct $675 million toward communities, including $500 million that would be made available through the MassWorks program, which assists cities and towns with infrastructure needs associated with development. The legislation also sets aside $50 million for redevelopment projects in cities, $75 million to redevelop contaminated brownfield sites and $25 million for a new site assembly and pre-development fund. House Speaker Robert DeLeo this week included a jobs bill on his must-do list fo tasks to be accomplished before formal sessions end July 31.
