Worcester's bioscience concentrations rival best in the nation

The greater Worcester concentration of bioscience employment earned it a spot on lists of places in the U.S. with the highest concentrations of workers in certain bioscience fields, alongside areas such as San Francisco and Boston, according to a report released yesterday at the 2016 BIO International Convention in San Francisco.

The study from the Biotechnology Innovation Organization and TEConomy Partners, analyzed 2014 data. It did not rank the Worcester metropolitan statistical area on the national list of areas with the most bioscientific employment, but the region that extends into Connecticut earned a designation for its high concentration of research and development, medical device, and drug and pharmaceutical employment. In 2014, the area employed 2,498 in research and testing, 1,332 in drugs and pharmaceuticals and 1,936 in medical devices and equipment.

Medical device employment in the area was down from the most recent past study, released in 2014 and analyzing 2012 numbers. In 2012, the area employed 2,226 in medical devices and 2,369 in research and testing. The Worcester area did not make the list of highest concentrations of drug and pharmaceutical employment in the last study.

The study also placed the Boston-Cambridge-Newton area on the list with Worcester, employing 15,879 in medical devices and equipment in 2014, 37,339 in research and testing and 9,513 in drugs and pharmaceuticals.
