WBJ named second best biz paper in country

Worcester Business Journal was honored as the second best small business-to-business publication in the country on Saturday at the annual conference of the Alliance of Area Business Publications, while a WBJ editorial was named the best of the year at the same ceremony.

The AABP judges, who hail from the University of Missouri School of Journalism, gave the Silver Award to WBJ in the Best Newspaper: Small Tabloid category.

"The variety of the stories, use of headlines and drop heads pulls readers into each story, along with design elements like boxes, quotes and subheads. With this clean presentation readers can easily move throughout the pages and find wonderful stories and columns. The use of the Flash Poll to involve readers on the editorial page is good example of an effort to maintain a strong relationship with an involved audience," the judges wrote.

The Daily Herald Business Ledger out of Illinois won the Gold Award in the category while the Springfield Business Journal out of Missouri took home the Bronze Award.

WBJ Editor Brad Kane and Publisher Peter Stanton took home a Gold Award in the Best Editorial: Small Tabloid category for their editorial “Baker, legislature need to encourage large solar installations" from October about the need for long-term planning for the implementation of state solar subsidies.

"The WBJ editorial, research and production departments put out amazing content across all categories on a daily basis, both in print and online. To receive honors like these is important and flattering, but we continue to judge our success based on our ability to deliver top-notch market intelligence to our local readers," Kane said.

AABP is an industry group of 46 business-to-business publications from the U.S., Canada and Australia.

WBJ sister publications -- all owned by New England Business Media -- took home awards as well. MaineBiz won a Silver Award for Best Ancillary Publication for its Fact Book, and Hartford Business Journal won Gold Awards for Best Scoop and Best Explanatory Journalism and Silver Awards for Best Editorial and Best Recurring Feature.
