UMass Memorial securing opioid prescriptions electronically

UMass Memorial Health Care has a new electronic prescription system.
UMass Memorial Health Care has put in place a new electronic prescription system that it says will provide for more secure prescribing of opioids and help reduce fraud and doctor shopping that can contribute to abuse of the pain medication.
Electronic prescribing of controlled substances is now mandated in many states, although it is not yet required in Massachusetts. The Imprivata security and identity platform will not only provide more secure prescription of opioids, but also improve authentication and access workflows with the organization’s new Epic electronic health record system.
“Technology like Imprivata Confirm ID will allow us to ensure that secure, safe electronic prescribing methods are utilized across our health system along with adding increased security to our core IT systems,” Dr. Eric Alper, vice president and chief clinical informatics officer for UMass Memorial Health Care, said in a statement.
The system also provides integrated two-factor authentication required by the Drug Enforcement Administration. Imprivata OneSign will allow UMass Memorial clinicians to securely access the hospital’s new Epic EHR and improve clinician workflows by providing an end-to-end password management solution that incorporates single sign-on, authentication management, and virtual desktop roaming. Providers can tap a badge or swipe a fingerprint to gain access to patient information.
