Record revenue projected for MBTA commuter rail

The MBTA’s commuter rail -- with stations in Worcester, Fitchburg and across MetroWest -- is anticipating record revenues of $215 million for fiscal year 2016.
The nation’s sixth busiest commuter rail has seen revenue increase by 5.8 percent to date this year. MBTA Chief Administrator Brian Shortsleeve said in a statement that because of enhanced fare collection efforts, that growth will continue to increase. A new fare collection system would reportedly make it easier to buy tickets while making it harder to evade fares.
Revenue for the month of May reached $17.8 million, according to a release from the MBTA. Over the past 16 months, monthly commuter rail revenue averaged $17.4 million.
