Worcester's EcoTarium raising $9.1M for new exhibits; infrastructure

The EcoTarium in Worcester.

Worcester’s EcoTarium has initiated the public phase of a $9.1 million fundraising campaign aimed at adding two new major exhibits and improving the location’s infrastructure.

The public phase follows a private fundraising effort that has already secured $7.2 million in support from private, foundation and corporate donations, and pledges during the quiet phase of the campaign. This includes a $2 million lead gift from the Myles & C. Jean McDonough Foundation.

The campaign funding will cover: a 2,500-square-foot exhibit on the museum’s middle level will immerse visitors in the science of the modern city, transforming the organization’s former polar bear exhibit into a wild cat station that will house mountain lions and other native New England species, improvements to the EcoTarium’s power plant and improvements to the EcoTarium’s narrow-guage railroad train that carriers visitors through the location’s 55 acres of property.

The announcement of the $1.9 million public portion of the fundraising campaign was made by EcoTarium President Joseph P. Cox at the museum’s Annual Meeting Tuesday night. The current fundraising effort builds upon a successful capital campaign that concluded in 2012, which raised $8.2 million, according to the EcoTarium.
