Worcester County rated low for small biz friendliness

Worcester County received poor rankings on business friendliness in a recent survey.

A national survey of small business owners has found that Worcester County is perceived to be among the least friendly areas in the nation for entrepreneurs and small business owners.

More than 30 business owners throughout Worcester County were asked to rank small business friendliness across a number of variables by Thumbtack, a service that pairs independent professionals and small business owners with customers. Worcester County’s ranking, which was a grade of D+ and put it at 71 out of 78 metropolises surveyed, was due in large part to low grades for health and safety laws, ease of hiring, the availability of training and networking programs and the ease of starting a business, according to a release from Thumbtack.

This ranking was a decline from the area’s ranking of 50 in the nation last year when it earned a B- in the survey, following surveys of 44 businesses.

In 2014, Worcester County had received an F through the survey.

There were bright spots for the region in the survey, with only 12 percent of those responding calling the area’s environmental rules “unfriendly,” thus performing 22 percent better with the national average.
