Four initiative petitions qualified for November vote

Four campaigns have qualified to put their proposed ballot laws before voters in November after meeting a signature filing deadline on Wednesday, according to Secretary of State William Galvin's office.

To earn a spot on the Nov. 8 ballot, backers of initiative petitions were required to submit a final round of 10,792 certified signatures from across the state to Galvin's office by Wednesday.

Of the 35 petitions originally filed with Attorney General Maura Healey's office, the four that made it through the certification and signature-gathering process will ask voters to decide on charter school expansion; the legalization, regulation and taxation of marijuana; a ban on the use of certain restrictive cages for farm animals; and authorization of a second slots parlor in Massachusetts.

Galvin spokesman Brian McNiff said the campaigns each "appear to have a surplus" of signatures. Exact totals were not available Wednesday afternoon.

A spokeswoman for the charter schools campaign said Wednesday it had submitted more than 20,000 signatures to Galvin's office. The marijuana legalization campaign reported turning in more than 25,000 signatures.

A representative of the farm animal campaign said on June 21 that group planned to submit 40,000 signatures by Wednesday's deadline.
