Big Y acquiring Hannafords in Milford, eastern Mass.

By Mike Mozart via Flickr Big Y is Springfield-based and will soon have 79 locations throughout Massachusetts and Connecticut.

Big Y has reached an agreement to acquire eight Hannaford supermarkets throughout the middle and eastern part of the state.

The stores, with one located in Milford, are being sold as part of the merger between the Ahold and Delhaize Group, according to a release from Big Y.

The transition to Big Y stores should be completed by early September, according to the company. At that time the stores will close for a few days for rebranding and upgrades, after which the stores will open as Big Y locations.

The company plans to keep as many current employees as possible.

Once this transaction is completed, Big Y will have a total of 79 store locations throughout Massachusetts and Connecticut including 72 supermarkets and 39 pharmacies. Big Y currently operates two locations in Eastern Massachusetts in Walpole and Franklin.

Headquartered in Springfield, Big Y is a family-owned and operated supermarket chain.
