Fitchburg State University will offer a graduate certificate in data science this fall, the latest move by one of the region’s colleges into the big data sphere.

The certificate will prepare students for careers in data integration, managing, mining and analysis, in various fields, according to Matthew Bruun, a university spokesperson. Students will develop skills in database development, machine learning, data mining, and data analysis and visualization, Bruun said.

It’s a sequence of four three-credit courses: introduction to data science; data exploration, analytics and visualization; machine learning for data science; and data mining and predictive analytics.

By adding the certificate, Fitchburg State joined a growing list of Central Massachusetts colleges with degree and certificate programs to help address the impending big data skills gap.
