Warren backs Healey on gun law enforcement
Warren said Healey won't be bullied.
Add Sen. Elizabeth Warren to those who have come to Attorney General Maura Healey's defense since the AG announced a crackdown on "copycat" assault weapons.
Healey's campaign on Monday morning circulated an email from Warren urging supporters of Healey's July 20 announcement to sign a Stop Handgun Violence petition supporting her enforcement action, to tweet their support for the attorney general, and to write letters to local newspapers.
Saying Healey "won't be bullied," Warren wrote that gun manufacturer Smith & Wesson had donated $500,000 to gun lobbyists "leading the fight against Maura." She added, "For days, Maura has faced vicious, hateful, ugly attacks to intimidate her into backing down."
Gun owners have held protests since Healey's surprise announcement and numerous public officials have asserted both that her crackdown is creating compliance issues because of ambiguity and that she overstepped her enforcement authority. The Legislature has opted against intervening.
The Gun Owners Action League says the attorney general's office is "currently seeking information from the firearms industry regarding customer lists and manufacturing dates" and has recommended that gun owners, retailers and manufacturers cease communications with the AG unless assisted by counsel. GOAL claims the July 20 announcement is "just the beginning," writing on its blog: "The AG is clearly planning a future attack and the lack of action on behalf of the legislature has given her their blessing to continue."
