The Massachusetts Department of Public Health said Wednesday it is investigating an alleged incident at Saint Vincent Hospital amid media reports that a surgeon at the Worcester hospital operated on the wrong patient and removed his or her kidney.

While DPH couldn’t confirm the details of the incident, originally reported by 7News Boston, the department issued a statement through a spokesperson.

“We are aware of this serious allegation and are investigating in line with our state and federal authority,” said DPH spokesman Scott Zoback.

Saint Vincent said the patient misidentification took place outside of the hospital and didn't involve its employees.

"Our staff followed proper protocols in preparing for and performing the surgery, which was scheduled by the patient’s physician at our hospital. Saint Vincent Hospital is committed to providing safe, high-quality care to every patient who enters our doors.  We are saddened that this incident occurred and our leadership continues to assure the patient receives the support and care needed," a statement from the hospital read.
