WPI receives $1.76M to instill entrepreneurial mindset

The Worcester Polytechnic Institute has received a $1.76 million grant it will use to incorporate an entrepreneurial mindset into its curriculum.

The grant from The Kern Family Foundation, which is headquarters in Wisconsin, will be used to build up students’ mindset of recognizing opportunities and respond creatively with a focus on making a positive impact, according to a release from the school. The grant expands upon $500,000 in funding the university received in 2015 from the foundation.

“Entrepreneurial mindset learning aligns perfectly with WPI’s plans to leverage our students’ strengths, passions and interests, and empower them to create solutions that will make a lasting difference,” WPI President Laurie Leshin said in a statement.

In addition to the grant, WPI is a partner of the Kern Entrepreneurial Engineering Network (KEEN), enabling WPI to collaborate with more than 20 partner institutions to teach an entrepreneurial mindset. In the past year, WPI has added a full-time professor of practice to oversee the KEEN programs on campus and help professors gear their teaching towards the mindset. On Aug. 1, Yael Schwartz took over as the entrepreneur-in-residence at WPI, the third since the program launched in 2014.

Over the next three years, WPI will develop curriculum for 100 courses that will instill the entrepreneurial mindset in all its students and annually host 10 extracurricular activities exposing students to KEEN programs.
