UMass Memorial first to offer new imaging technology

Rob Carlin UMass Memorial Health Care is the first in the nation to use the OEC Elite MiniView C-arm from GE Healthcare.

Last week, UMass Memorial Medical Center became the first hospital in the nation to receive a portable X-ray machine for arms and legs that locks in place and uses lower doses of radiation than a traditional machine.

UMass Memorial surgeons can now use the OEC Elite MiniView C-arm from GE Healthcare during diagnostic and therapeutic treatments, and for surgical procedures of the limbs, extremities or shoulders, according to the hospital. The $80,000 X-ray’s dual flat panel monitors with high-resolution imaging technology allows surgeons to look at small bones in much greater detail, making it easier to spot things like small fractures or tumors. It arrived last week was used for the first time on Monday.

The C-arm is portable and much smaller than a traditional x-ray machine, according to UMass Memorial, and will be used by orthopedic and emergency physicians and surgeons.
