Cigna first national insurer to cover Hologic's 3D breast exam

Hologic’s 3D mammography exam will now be covered for all of Cigna’s members, marking the first national insurer to cover the procedure.

The insurance provider will now cover the procedure for annual breast cancer screening for all women over age 40, and for high-risk women starting at age 25. Cigna changed its policy based on recent guidance from the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN), according to a release from Marlborough’s Holigic, with research finding that the 3D screening can detect cancer 15 months earlier than traditional 2D screenings.

The change in policy will now allow the insurance organization’s 12.5 million members nationwide to be covered for the exam.

The exams have been available in the U.S. since 2011, with an estimated 10 million women in the U.S. having received the exam, according to Hologic.
