Worcester hardware store breaking ground on expansion

The company has been selling screwdrivers and other tools for over 100 years.
The 102-year-old, family owned Worcester company Barrows Hardware is set to break ground on a 6,300 square foot expansion tomorrow.
According to a release from the city, which helped the third-generation owners navigate the permitting process, the expansion will allow the business to expand its current offerings, create a redesigned parking lot, and add more services, including propane dispensing. The new store will be 15,000-square-feet and remain at the Webster Square location of 15 Webster St.
“We love to celebrate new business in Worcester, but supporting our mainstay local businesses is just as important,” City Manager Edward M. Augustus, Jr. said in a statement.
Irving Barrows started Barrows Hardware in Webster Square in 1914. His son, Bob Barrows, moved the business in the 1960s to its current location, where it is now operated by his son, Brian Barrows.
The official groundbreaking will take place at 1 p.m. on Tuesday.
