Foreclosure starts in Central Massachusetts have dropped off, bringing an end to months of increases and improving more than the state as a whole, according to the latest report from The Warren Group.

Foreclosure petitions in Worcester and Middlesex counties fell by 17.2 and 5.3 percent, respectively. This puts both counties ahead of the state, which had a 1.1-percent drop in foreclosure petitions.

Even amid this positive news, the state is still well ahead of last year when it comes to looming foreclosures, with foreclosure petitions still up 20.3 percent year-over-year, with 7,648 as of July. Worcester and Middlesex counties are still ahead of the state with the petitions only growing by 15.6 and 17 percent, respectively.
