As the temperature drops and the holiday season closes in, UPS is ramping up its hiring and looking for an additional 696 employees in the Central Massachusetts region.

The hiring in Central Massachusetts is for the company’s three facilities in Ashland, Shrewsbury and Leominster. The local numbers are part of 2,600 people that the company is looking to hire in the greater Boston area and part of 95,000 in hiring nationwide, according to a release from the company. These positions are a combination of seasonal and permanent positions.

“For many, it’s an opportunity to earn some extra cash for the holidays,” CEO David Abney, who started loading trucks at night in 1974 while studying business at Delta State University in Mississippi, said in a statement. “But with many of our holiday hires getting permanent jobs with us, it can also be a gateway to a career.”

According to UPS, from the 2012 through 2014 holiday seasons, over 37 percent of the people UPS hired for seasonal package handler jobs wound up working for UPS on a permanent basis after the holidays were over.
