Nashoba Valley Medical Center in Ayer will be the first hospital in Central Massachusetts to offer a non-surgical weight loss procedure for people with mild to moderate obesity.

The availability of the procedure was announced Monday. It is called the ReShape Integrated Dual Balloon System and serves as built-in portion control for patients with a body mass index of 30 to 40 who have not succeeded with diet and exercise alone. During a short endoscopic procedure, the balloon is inserted into the stomach, where it stays for six months to help curb hunger, according to Nashoba.

A U.S. Food and Drug Administration study of ReShape involving 326 patients across eight sites in the U.S. found patients who used it experienced 2.3 times more weight loss after six months compared to those who relied on diet and exercise, according to Nashoba. Patients lost up to 72 pounds in 12 months.
