Harvard Pilgrim gets $4 million to study childhood obesity, asthma

The Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Institute, a research division of the insurer, has received a $4 million renewable grant from the National Institutes of Health to study prevention of childhood obesity and asthma.

The grant announced Tuesday is part of the NIH’s Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes initiative, a seven-year research effort centered around discovering how environmental factors influence child and adolescent health in early development. Using a sample of Boston-area women and children, Harvard Pilgrim will investigate environmental influences of obesity, asthma and other health issues, and identify interventions that can be used to support children’s health.

The $4 million will fund the first two years of the project, with an option to renew for the remaining five years of the study. This is standard practice for government funding initiatives, according to Harvard Pilgrim.

Harvard Pilgrim is based in Wellesley but has offices throughout the state, including Worcester.
