Sunovion partners with Demi Lovato in mental health campaign

Sunovion Pharmaceuticals of Marlborough has partnered with Demi Lovato on a photo campaign to increase mental illness awareness.

Marlborough-based drug maker Sunovion Pharmaceuticals has partnered with pop singer Demi Lovato and others on a photo campaign to encourage responsible portrayals of mental health issues in America, according to a statement.

The Be Vocal Collection, launched Wednesday, includes photographs of 10 people living with mental illness in America. A production of Getty Images and photojournalist Shaul Schwarz, the collection is available free of charge to the public.

“Too often, the imagery we see in media or online sensationalizes or romanticizes mental illness. Be Vocal wanted to help change that,” Lovato, who was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, said in a statement.

According to Be Vocal, one in five Americans is diagnosed with a mental health condition each year.

Among its product offerings, Sunovion sells Latuda, an antipsychotic that is used to treat bipolar disorder, and Lunesta, a sleep aid.

Five national mental health advocacy organizations are also part of the Be Vocal partnership.
