Worcester area energy efficiency jobs top 10K

Courtesy Environmental Entrepreneurs The majority of Massachusetts energy efficiency jobs are in efficient lighting.

A new report detailing energy efficiency employment has found that the Worcester area has 10,666 employees in the industry.

These Worcester employees make up roughly an eighth of the 82,848 Massachusetts residents who work in energy efficiency related jobs, according to the report from report by Environmental Entrepreneurs released Tuesday. The greater Boston area has 47,722 employees with the Springfield area having 12,040 employees.

Overall, Massachusetts ranks fourth in the nation for energy efficiency jobs, with 89 percent of those jobs focused on efficiency services. Installation firms make up 43 percent of the activity, followed by trade with 26 percent.

The state has a mix of small, medium and large companies in the sector: Sixty-five percent of firms have ten or fewer employees, 27 percent have 11 to 49 employees, and four percent have more than 50 permanent workers.
