UMass researcher gets $788K

A researcher at UMass Medical School has received a $788,000 grant to investigate a protein that could direct the development of new chemotherapy drugs.

The grant to Brian Kelch will fund exploration of the behavior of the protein PCNA. The research will ultimately direct the development of chemotherapy drugs that target PCNA for cancer treatment, according to the American Cancer Society that provided the grant.

The award is one of six grants totaling $1.6 million to researchers in Massachusetts from the American Cancer Society that were announced Thursday. The organization has a total research investment of $38.6 million in Massachusetts.
