Israel, Mass. agree to joint research

Gov. Charlie Baker has signed an agreement calling for joint research and development efforts with Israel.

Gov. Charlie Baker on Tuesday signed an agreement with Israeli officials calling for Massachusetts and Israel to pursue joint research and development efforts aimed at bringing new products to the global marketplace.

In Tel Aviv on a trade mission, Baker signed the accord with Israeli Chief Scientist Avi Hasson and Inon Elroy, the country's economic minister to North America, according to the governor's office.

"This bilateral agreement reaffirms Massachusetts's special relationship with the State of Israel by renewing our commitment to work with our Israeli partners on research and business development," Baker said in a statement. "By providing a new foundation for cooperative research and development activities, this agreement will enhance the Commonwealth's economic competitiveness, spur new innovations in emerging technology fields, and advance our commitment to growing jobs across Massachusetts."

Before announcing the agreement, Baker met with Hasson and Elroy to discuss "government’s role in fostering innovation economies through the development of commercial research and public private partnerships," his office said.

Also on Tuesday, Baker was scheduled to address a General Electric Israel breakfast, participate in a memorial ceremony at Yad Vashem, the world Holocaust remembrance center, and attend a social entrepreneurship dinner in Jerusalem.
