Worcester among best mid-size college cities in U.S.

A new analysis by WalletHub has ranked Worcester the 29th best college city out of 151 midsize cities in the United States.

The analysis used 26 indicators of academic, social and economic growth potential ranging from cost of living to the quality of education available, according to a release on Tuesday from the Washington, D.C. personal finance website.

The ranking placed Worcester behind nearby rival Providence, which was ranked 19th, and directly behind New Haven at 28th, but ahead of other New England communities including Springfield at 135th and Bridgeport at 146th.

On the overall ranking of 415 U.S. cities -- which includes large, midsize and small cities -- Worcester was ranked 133rd, receiving high marks for academic and economic opportunities, but being dragged down by social environment that includes measures such as number of students per capita and crime rate and "walletfitness” rankings that measure things such as housing costs and cost of higher education.

The highest ranked overall college city in the nation was Oxford, Ohio, followed by East Lansing, Mich. The highest ranked New England city overall was Amherst at fifth, followed by Durham, N.H. at 11th and Storrs, Conn. at 15th.
