Nashoba Valley Medical launches surgical weight loss

Nashoba Valley Medical Center's surgical weight loss procedures now include gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy.

Nashoba Valley Medical Center announced Thursday its Center for Weight Control now offers surgical weight loss services for people who struggle to keep the weight off on a long-term basis. The center also hired a new surgeon.

The Ayer hospital’s surgical weight loss procedures now include gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy. Services are intended for patients who have a body mass index of more than 40, or of 35 or higher with related medical conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure and sleep apnea. Weight loss-patients will work with the center’s staff to determine which surgical option is best for them, President Salvatore Perla, said in a press release.

Dr. John Hwang, a bariatric surgeon, recently joined the Center for Weight Control, according to the hospital. Hwang is a graduate of Tufts University School of Medicine, completed a general surgery residency at Stamford Hospital in Connecticut and completed a fellowship in bariatric surgery at Lahey Hospital and Medical Center in Burlington. He is fluent in English, Mandarin Chinese and Taiwanese.
