Mass. unemployment falls to 2.8%

The Massachusetts unemployment rate fell to 2.8 percent in December.

The Massachusetts unemployment rate fell for the sixth consecutive month in December, dropping to 2.8 percent for the first time since December 2000.

Preliminary estimates from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics indicate Massachusetts added 6,600 jobs in December. Compared to December of 2015, the state had 73,300 fewer unemployed residents and 112,900 more employed residents over the year, according to the Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development.

In the private sector, the largest percentage job gains were in construction; professional, scientific and business services; education and health services; and leisure and hospitality. The labor force participation rate is 64.7 percent.
