Manufacturers can earn $3,500 with National Grid program

WBJ File

National Grid on Tuesday said it is looking for volunteer companies for its pilot program where business, including manufacturers, in Massachusetts and Rhode Island can earn up to $3,500 by reducing their energy use during peak times.

In this commercial demand response program, participating businesses will be able to earn $35 per kilowatt-hour reduction in energy and will be asked to reduce electric use for at least 20 hours over the summer.

The two-year program aims to save enough energy to power more than 20,000 homes, roughly the size of Medford.

This is not National Grid’s first demand response program. National Grid recently extended its residential demand response program called Smart Energy Solutions in which nearly 15,000 customers in Worcester saved $16 per month by reducing electricity use during peak energy use.

National Grid teamed up with Boston-based EnerNOC, Baltimore-based CPower and New Jersey-based IPKeys Technologies for its commercial demand response program program. National Grid is the largest distributor of natural gas in the Northeast servicing Massachusetts, New York and Rhode Island.
