Central Mass. college loan debt averages $33K

U.S. Rep. Jim McGovern's district averages $33,000 per resident in college debt, far above the national average.

The workforce in the Congressional district covering most of Central Massachusetts has college loan debts averaging $33,000 per resident, according to LendEDU, a website that aims to increase transparency of the student loan process.

LendEDU's report, released Thursday, shows residents in Worcester and many surrounding communities owe at least as much or more than those in Congressional districts closer to and including Boston.

The state's Second Congressional District, represented by Congressman Jim McGovern (D-MA) has average student debts of $33,000, the report showed. Just over three out of every four graduates had tuition debt.

The Massachusetts district with the highest average loans, with $39,055, was the Sixth District, represented by Congressman Seth Moulton (D-MA) and covering much of the North Shore.

The Massachusetts average of $31,686 in student loan debt trailed only Connecticut, Delaware, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island.
