Business lobbying group to meet with Senate
In the second in a series of meetings intended to mend fences between the Senate and the Massachusetts business community, the Senate will hold a joint caucus Wednesday to hear from the perhaps the state's most powerful business lobby group: Associated Industries of Massachusetts.
Viewed as the less business-friendly branch of the Legislature, the Senate has already met with the Massachusetts Business Roundtable before the work of legislating gets going in earnest. Senators will meet with AIM at noon Wednesday in Room 428, Senate President Stanley Rosenberg's office said.
Rosenberg said earlier this month the Senate plans to hold a "series of these discussions with various associations here in Massachusetts in the coming months."
Business groups last session found more allies in the more moderate House. After the end of formal sessions last summer, AIM scored lawmakers from both chambers on how they voted on issues important to businesses. The results, the influential business lobby said, painted "a tale of two chambers."
"While the House of Representatives and Speaker Robert DeLeo successfully forged consensus on important measures such as wage equity and energy, the Senate hewed to a more progressive, ideological approach that produced a steady stream of bills with the potential to harm the Massachusetts economy," AIM wrote& in its August scorecard, which bestowed the lowest score of any lawmaker upon Rosenberg.
Wednesday's joint caucus will be open to the press for the initial presentation from AIM but will an expected Q&A session will be limited to senators, staff and officials from the business lobbying group.
