Worcester rink inks deal with St. Peter-Marian High School

Grant Welker The Worcester Ice Center under construction last month.

The Worcester Ice Center has another new tenant, and this one will create a first-time hockey program in the process.

St. Peter-Marian High School in Worcester is the latest tenant for the under-construction Canal District facility, and it will field a girls' hockey program for the first time in its history starting with the 2017-'18 season. The Worcester Railers HC, whose owner, Cliff Rucker, owns the facility, made the announcement Monday.

The Worcester Railers Foundation will help field the team by donating equipment and other costs.

The St. Peter-Marian Guardians boys' and girls' teams will be the sixth tenants of the rink facility, joining Worcester State University, Becker College, Worcester Academy, Worcester Junior Sharks and Junior Crusaders.

The $18-million facility is slated to open in August off Winter and Harding streets. The minor-league Railers, who will use the Ice Center as a practice facility, will begin play this October.
