Heywood Healthcare is looking to raise $10 million for three major capital projects, including a new emergency department and medical office building at Athol Hospital, the healthcare network announced Tuesday.

The Gardner health care network said the money will help it expand to accommodate its growing patient population, and allow it to upgrade its facilities.

In addition to the new emergency room, the campaign will also fund two other major capital projects: an expansion and modernization of the Heywood Hospital Surgical Pavilion, and the development of the Quabbin Retreat, a new substance abuse and mental health treatment facility.

The new emergency department at Athol Hospital will be twice the size of the current space with eight acute care rooms, six private behavioral health rooms, a separate entrance for ambulances, 13 exam rooms, and allow for better workflow, according to Heywood. The Athol Hospital project alone will account for $3 million of the total and is scheduled to be finished by fall 2018.
