Workers Credit Union has acquired local insurance agency Braley & Wellington.

Editor's note: This story has been updated with information from Braley & Wellington saying employees will not be impacted by the acquisition.

In an effort to expand its portfolio of financial services, Workers Credit Union has acquired a local retail insurance agency.

The Fitchburg credit union with over $1.5 billion in assets announced Wednesday that it bought the Braley & Wellington Group, which has four locations in Central Massachusetts, for an undisclosed sum. A press release from Workers said that the credit union wanted to expand its financial services offerings to include direct insurance activities.

Representatives from Braley & Wellington said that employees will not be impacted by the acquisition and that all of the firm's locations will continue to operate as usual.

Workers serves 91,000 people in Massachusetts and Southern New Hampshire, and has 16 branches across the region. Braley & Wellington provides a complete range of commercial and personal insurance products and a full time claims department. It has offices in Worcester, Auburn, Millbury, and Leominster.
