First Night Worcester shuts down

First Night Worcester, Inc., the organizer of the annual New Year's Eve arts festival, has decided to discontinue operations after 35 years.

The nonprofit arts organization didn't offer a specific reason for disbanding in a press release, instead opting to thank its supporters. The city of Worcester, the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce, and Discover Central Massachusetts are looking into developing a new downtown New Year's Eve event, according to the release.

"A lot of good things are happening throughout Worcester and in the downtown. A community celebration to mark the beginning of the New Year should be one of them," said chamber President and CEO Timothy Murray. "The chamber and Discover Central Massachusetts look forward to working with the city to develop a new event in downtown Worcester."
